Mountain Goats Poll And Ticket Giveaway!

This Friday, May 16, The Mountain Goats will be playing an AIDS benefit show at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple in Ft. Greene. This is a great venue to see any show, but this special event is sure to be incredible. The lineup also includes John Oliver (from Comedy Central), Rock Plaza Central, The Gotham City Girls Roller Derby, and much more. Click "more" on this post for the full details.

Here's your chance to win a pair of tickets to this (which can be purchased through Ticketweb). Just answer the poll question (about your favorite Mountain Goats "Going To..." song) and then make sure to send a comment after submitting your poll. In the comment, I will need your name, email address, and if you want - your phone number in the body of the comment (don't worry, this info will go to me and nobody else). On the morning of Thursday, May 15, I'll randomly pick one of the emails and contact the winner. You'll have until 5pm Thursday to confirm (this is where providing your phone number when you enter might come in handy, in case you're not an obsessive email checker like some people) and then your name and a friend's will be on the list at the show!

Answer the poll and enter for your chance to win two tickets to the show! (You can also just do the poll without entering the contest, but why would you do that?)

If you feel bad about going to a benefit event for free, well, the money from the bar is also part of the funds, so drink up while you're there!

Ruined Music is back, now with more Dark Meat

I've been a little crazy over Athens' Dark Meat ever since I saw them at SXSW in March, so it' fitting that we chose them as the first band to take part in a new feature over at Ruined Music. We're calling it Ruined Music Backstage, where we ask bands to confess their ruined music secrets (and get them to tell us about their cats, too).

Check it out and don't forget, we are always interested in hearing your own stories of Ruined Music!

Morning Theft "break up"

Morning Theft @ Luna Lounge, Brooklyn - 2007. Photo by Bryan Bruchman

Longstanding local champions of 90's style guitar rock, Morning Theft, announced that they're splitting up (amicably) and won't be playing any more shows. Definitely a bummer for those of us who have been fans of this band for years. Read what the band has to say in this myspace blog.

You can still get their WHOLE ALBUM, Between Walls, for FREE at the band's website. Don't pass this up, music this good is worth paying for.

NYC Attack On Music Continues... Luna Lounge Closed

It's gotten to the point where I'm not even surprised when I hear news like this anymore. Jezebel Music founder Gabriel Levitt posted the following online in regards to a benefit show scheduled for tonight at Luna Lounge being cancelled after the NYC Health Department (temporarily?) shut the venue down last night:

"We're very sorry to report that the Luna Lounge was temporarily closed down by the New York City Health Department last night and the Benefit show for Common Ground is canceled. Those of you who bought advance tickets can use them for the rescheduled show. Also, please note that the advance ticket sales will all go right to Common Ground.

Because we don't know all of the facts, I hesitate to disparage the responsible parties. But I feel completely free to write that it seems very unfair to shut down a rock venue/bar on a Friday night right before the music starts, and thus putting the business out for the whole weekend, unless the public's health is really at risk. I highly doubt this was the case..." Read the full post at Jezebel Music.

After a number of closings (both temporary and permanent) for venues (Sound Fix comes to mind, obviously) it's really starting to feel like there's a very specific push right now-more than ever before-to get music venues and bars shut down. Somehow it doesn't look like it'll be slowing down any time soon, so I wouldn't be surprised if your favorite local venue was the next target, unfortunately.

AFTER THE JUMP FEST 2008! Announced!

In a few short months, it will be Summer and that means the second annual After the Jump Fest! Bigger, better with even more acts and surprise guests, this year the festival takes place along side the city wide music event, Make Music New York (which itself is a part of the worldwide music phenomenon that takes place in 300 cities in 108 countries) on the first day of Summer, June 21st.

After the Jump Fest is the effort of 20 New York City music bloggers whose goal is to help new artists gain exposure while raising money for struggling school music programs. This year, After the Jump is teaming up with The Music Hall of Williamsburg and Galapagos Art Space for a festival stretching from noon until last call. In the next few months, After the Jump blogs will be making more announcements about the festival including new artists and pre-parties. Stay tuned and in the mean time, check out AftertheJumpFest.com for information on our past events and mark your calendars! It's going to be a doozy.
