Apparently there are good things in the music world happening this week that are not at all related to SXSW. In the first of many anticipated crossovers from my usual Portland, Maine-centric blogging over at HillyTown, here’s an update on one of that scene’s key players. If I’d had time, this would have been a robot drawing.
Chriss Sutherland may be best known as a member of the defunct Cerberus Shoal, or perhaps from Young God Records’ Fire On Fire. Either way, he’s been actively making exciting music in Portland for over a decade now, and I think he’s just about to hit his stride. Today his second full length, Worried Love, is out on Peapod Recordings (buy it here). Filled with new folks song, Spanish hits re imagined, and an ode to another singer, the album is dense and never lets up for a minute. Often performing solo, it’s been a pleasure to hear these songs fleshed out with full instrumentation and additional vocalists. Word is that attendees of the release show will be treated to a very special one-of-a-kind performance of this music.
Chriss celebrates the release at SPACE Gallery in Portland, Maine this Friday, March 20th. Joining the new, 5-piece Brown Bird for a late March/early April tour. Definitely check out one of these dates if you can (Union Pool on March 23rd, I’m looking at you!)
